ITC History

Our History

Since our founding in 2003, ITC has:

  • Acquired and integrated three electrical transmission businesses as owner/operator
  • Pioneered a greenfield transmission-only utility, ITC Great Plains
  • Identified and facilitated critical regional transmission projects
  • Established a portfolio of actionable development projects
  • Partnered with local utilities on projects
  • Explored creative approaches to power grid modernization

We continue to pursue these strategies, all part of our vision toward a “Greater Grid. Greener Future.” Here are some milestones:

2003

  • Company established as ITCTransmission with the acquisition of DTE transmission assets

2005

  • ITC Holdings Corp. becomes first publicly-traded independent transmission company

2006

  • Greenfield development activities begin: ITC Great Plains established
  • Company acquires Michigan Electric Transmission Company (METC) from Consumers Energy

2007

  • ITC Midwest formed through acquisition of transmission assets of Interstate Power & Light

2009-10

  • MISO releases RGOS study, validating ITC’s Green Power Express vision
  • ITC announces Green Power Express wind-energy transmission vision as catalyst to advance regional transmission in upper Midwest

2012

  • ITC completes KETA transmission line in Kansas

2013-14

  • ITC marks 10th anniversary with system reliability at top quartile or better performance
  • ITC completes Kansas V-Plan project in partnership with Sunflower Electric Power Corp.

2015

  • ITC completes Michigan Thumb Loop project, largest in company’s history

2016

  • ITC Holdings Corp. becomes a subsidiary of Fortis Inc.
  • Independent study by ICF International shows ITC’s capital investments between 2008-2014 had positive financial impacts on reliability, renewable energy integration and market efficiency totaling ~$1.4B

2017-18

  • ITC continues to advance four MISO MVP projects through regulatory and construction phases
  • ITC completes MVP 3 transmission project in Minnesota and Iowa
  • ITC marks 15th anniversary with continuing system reliability performance improvement

2019

  • ITC completes MVP 4 project in Iowa and MVP 7 project connecting Iowa and Missouri
  • Updated study by ICF International: ITC’s grid Investments 2008-2017 delivered more than $10 billion in customer benefits

2020

  • Massive derecho in Iowa causes worst damage in ITC’s history. EEI recognizes ITC and Alliant Energy for outstanding and coordinated restoration efforts
  • ITC completes Goss Substation, METC’s first solar interconnection, connecting 239 MW of solar generation

2022

  • MISO approves first phase of the Long Range Transmission Plan, resulting in ITC Michigan and ITC Midwest projects to interconnect lower carbon sources of generation, and enhance reliability and resiliency

2023

  • ITC marks 20 years of modernizing the greater grid to ensure continued safe and reliable service for customers – learn more
  • ITC kicks off several Long Range Transmission Plan projects in Iowa and Michigan
