PROJECT PLANNING
At ITC we take a broad, holistic and transparent approach toward transmission planning to benefit all customers and regions. Our proven planning approach creates an environmentally friendly transmission system, providing power to our direct and indirect customers. ITC’s open and transparent planning process includes:
- Engaging stakeholders and regulators to identify issues and solutions.
- Implementing timely and cost-effective solutions.
- Having significant experience and expertise in regional planning.
- Being first to provide ongoing plans and recommendations for seams projects and integration across RTOs.
- Having best-in-the-industry resources and partnerships for engineering design, planning and maintenance.
Our broad, regional view supports competitive wholesale energy markets. Local plans developed by ITC are evaluated through an independent process governed by regional transmission organizations (RTOs) in compliance with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) Order 890.
PROJECT EXPERIENCE
Since our inception in 2003, ITC has acquired and integrated three transmission businesses, pioneered a transmission-only utility from the ground up and facilitated a host of critical projects. We have invested more than $10.1 billion in the electric transmission grid to improve reliability, expand access to markets, lower the overall cost of delivered energy and allow new generating resources to interconnect to our transmission systems. ITC started in the Detroit-metro area, but has grown to serve customers across seven states. Our experience ranges from building long-distance transmission lines and substations to small asset renewal projects.

FINANCING
One hundred percent of ITC’s financial capital is devoted to transmission investment. ITC’s financial strength and independent business model provide the ability to efficiently finance transmission development, both from internally generated cash and access to capital markets. Due to ITC’s financial strength and solid investment grade credit ratings, we can finance new transmission projects in a cost-effective manner to the ultimate benefit of customers.
ENGINEERING
ITC brings strong engineering expertise to our projects. Our in-house engineering staff totals more than 250 engineering employees across our design, operations and planning departments. These resources include: more than 30 engineers in project development functions such as detailed designs for high-voltage electrical infrastructure and 15 project management engineers. ITC also works closely with various consulting firms on detailed engineering and design packages.
CONSTRUCTION
ITC’s construction standards meet all National Electric Safety Code requirements. We strictly avoid constructing transmission at Grade C or below. ITC maintains best-in-class construction standards and construction techniques to provide a reliable and robust transmission system to benefit our customers.
SAFETY
Providing a safe workplace for all employees and contractors is integral to our culture. ITC’s safety performance routinely ranks among the top of our industry in the Edison Electric Institute Annual Safety Survey. This survey looks at the number of injuries and lost work day cases. To help grow our safety culture, we hold an annual safety summit for all employees and contractors across the company to reinforce the importance of thinking safety in everything we do.

CUSTOMER & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
ITC has two customer service teams: Community Affairs and Stakeholder Relations. Our Community Affairs team acts as a community partner by understanding and building trust with local governments, community leaders, regulatory agencies and community groups. Direct community involvement, an understanding of local ordinances and relationships with various permitting agencies help ITC effectively secure required permits for capital and maintenance projects. ITC’s Stakeholder Relations team serves as a single point of contact with transmission customers of ITC. This team meets proactively with customers to identify their power needs, ensures efficient and effective connection of new load and gathers customer feedback on load increases and decreases.
