ITC Midwest Engages with Denmark Fire Department on Substation Safety Ahead of New Project

DENMARK, Iowa (July 7, 2025) — As part of ITC Midwest’s ongoing commitment to safety and community collaboration, representatives from the company recently partnered with the Denmark Fire Department to support fire safety education in preparation for a new substation project near Denmark, Iowa.

Local Government and Community Affairs Area Manager Scott Arnold, Safety Manager Jamey Parker, and Senior Safety Specialist Scott Clark led the initiative on behalf of ITC Midwest. The engagement was prompted by Denmark Fire Chief Todd Ross, who proactively reached out to ensure his team was well-prepared for potential emergency scenarios involving high-voltage infrastructure. In response, ITC Midwest organized a special event that included guided tours of the new Deeds substation and an in-depth discussion on fire safety protocols.

“Responding to fires in utility substations requires extreme caution and coordination due to the presence of high-voltage equipment and the risk of explosion or electrocution,” said Parker. “We’re proud to work with local fire departments like Denmark’s to ensure first responders are equipped with the knowledge and tools they need in case of an emergency.”

The ITC Midwest safety team covered best practices such as immediate utility notification, establishing safe perimeters, waiting for utility personnel before entry, and coordinating the use non-conductive tools and grounding fire apparatus with the utility personnel. These steps are critical in ensuring the safety of both emergency personnel and the surrounding community.

“This kind of collaboration is exactly what we need to keep our firefighters safe,” said Todd Ross, Denmark Fire Chief. “We appreciate ITC Midwest’s willingness to walk us through the substation and share their expertise. It helps us prepare for the unexpected and reinforces our shared commitment to public safety.”

This partnership exemplifies how ITC Midwest works hand-in-hand with the communities it serves—especially during the development of large-scale infrastructure projects—to prioritize safety and build lasting relationships.
