Ledyard-Colby

To meet the demand for improved reliability and to permit greater access to generating sources, ITC Midwest is building the Ledyard-Colby 345 kV electric transmission line. Construction on this 55-mile segment between ITC Midwest’s Ledyard and Colby Substations in northern Iowa began in late 2017, with competition slated for 2019

The Ledyard-Colby line is a portion MVP 4, one of 17 transmission projects that MISO, the independent transmission organization for the 11-state region that includes Iowa, studied and designated as a “Multi-Value Project” (MVP). The Ledyard-Colby line will bring four major types of benefits to northern Iowa and the rest of the MISO region: improved reliability, expanded access to generation sources, increased system efficiency, and economic investment.

  • How big will this line be?
    Depending on the terrain along the line route, the new tubular steel poles will be approximately 100 to 175 feet tall and will be spaced approximately 800 to 1,000 feet apart, but will vary with terrain and local conditions. The structures will be installed on concrete foundations that are between eight and 12 feet in diameter.
  • How was this route chosen?
    The proposed locations of the Huntley, Ledyard and Kossuth County substations are the primary factors in the line route. To minimize impact on landowners where possible, ITC is proposing to locate the new line along existing transmission lines, placing both lines on opposite sides of new single-pole structures. To determine the appropriate route to connect the substations in Iowa, ITC carefully considered the factors mandated by Iowa Code §478.18(2) and Section 11.1(7) of the Iowa Administrative Code and the appropriate Minnesota statutes and rules for the lines in Minnesota.
  • What is the timing for construction?
    Construction will depend on the timetable for acquiring landowner easements and obtaining Iowa Utilities Board approval. The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission issued its approvals for the Minnesota portion of the project at the end of 2014. ITC Midwest proposes to start construction in 2015 with projected completion by the end of 2017.
