Colby-Killdeer 345 kV Electric Transmission Project (MVP 4)

The Colby-Killdeer line is part of a network of new 345 kV transmission lines built by ITC and MidAmerican Energy to serve the region. This new ITC line runs approximately 12 miles from the company’s Colby substation northwest of Mason City to ITC’s Killdeer substation southwest of Mason City. ITC built the line on new structures that also carry an existing 161 kV transmission line that currently serves the area.

Multiple Benefits
MISO, the independent transmission organization for the 11-state region that includes Iowa, has studied and designated 17 transmission projects as “Multi-Value Projects” (MVPs). The Colby-Killdeer line is a portion of one of those projects, MVP 4. These lines will bring four major benefits to northern Iowa and the rest of the MISO region: improved reliability, expanded access to generation sources, increased system efficiency, and economic investment.
