ITC Midwest Supports Marshalltown Tornado Recovery Efforts

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (September 12, 2018) – ITC Midwest, the provider of electricity transmission service to the Marshalltown area, has committed $25,000 in financial support for disaster relief recovery and rebuilding following the devastating July tornado.

Through the ITC Charitable Giving Program, the company will contribute $10,000 to Mid-Iowa Community Action, Inc. (MICA), a private, nonprofit organization that has served children and families in vulnerable situations in central Iowa since 1965.  These funds will be used to provide emergency relief to families who were directly affected by the storm.

“We are tremendously grateful for ITC Midwest’s generous contribution to the Marshalltown Family Tornado Relief Fund. Through the support of organizations like ITC and individual donors, we have been able to help hundreds of families, removing the barriers they have to securing safe housing, transportation to work and school, and access to food and electricity,” said MICA Executive Director Arlene McAtee. “The Marshalltown community has come together in an extraordinary way to help those who need it the most following this terrible disaster, and we are so thankful to be able to help families take steps toward immediate and long-term recovery.”

In addition, the company has designated $15,000 to support the Rebuild Marshalltown Fund, which was established by the Community Foundation of Marshall County to raise funds to support community rebuilding.

“The Community Foundation of Marshall County is dedicated to helping people help their community. During this trying time, we have seen the power of this mission in action as our community has come together to help our neighbors in need. While this outpouring of support is humbling, we know the needs of the community will be substantial and ongoing,” said Community Foundation Executive Director Dylan Does.  “ITC Midwest’s generous gift to theRebuild Marshalltown Fund will be used for the significant rebuilding that lies ahead. Our community will desperately need support to regain the tragic losses we’ve incurred and thanks to the gifts to this fund from ITC and others, support will be here to make investments where it is most needed.”

Shortly after the tornado passed, ITC crews responded to begin clearing debris and rebuilding lines.  Within 72 hours after the storm struck, ITC had restored transmission service to the city, which facilitated the return of electricity to homes and businesses.

“We are grateful to our employees and contractors who immediately responded to Marshalltown,” said ITC Midwest Area Manager Troy Weary.  “Through their diligent work, the damaged lines were removed and rebuilt quickly and safely.  Given the magnitude of the damage and debris, the ITC team restored transmission service to the community in a relatively short period of time.”

Since taking over ownership of the transmission system in 2007, ITC Midwest has made significant investments in the Marshalltown area to improve the reliability and resilience of the electrical grid to benefit the community.

“We at ITC value our relationship with the Marshalltown community, and we were saddened by the extensive property damage and personal losses caused by the tornado,” said ITC Midwest President Krista Tanner.  “While our first priority was to help restore power to the area, it is important for us to provide additional support for community recovery.  We’re hopeful these contributions can help with short-term relief and long-term rebuilding to benefit those affected by this storm.”
