Operational Excellence: Bringing Reliable Power to the Midwest
ITC’s calling card is operational excellence – turning low-performing transmission systems into top-tier reliability success stories. In the Midwest, our system consists of 6,600 circuit miles of transmission lines ranging in voltage from 34.5kV to 345kV. Through ongoing system investments and operations and maintenance programs, we have reduced the average number of outages on our system by 49 percent since 2008.
At voltages below 100kV – the majority of the system – we have reduced the number of outages from an average of 1,123 outages per year in the first three years of ownership to an annual average of 563 outages in the last three years, representing a 50 percent decrease in the rolling average.
At voltages of 100kV and above, ITC Midwest has improved from a three-year average of 58 outages per year in the first three years of ownership to an annual average of 33 in the last three years, representing a 43 percent decrease in the rolling average. And that’s just the beginning – as we continue to upgrade the transmission system, these benefits will build over the lifetime of the system.
