Michigan Thumb Generator Interconnections

As Michigan continues to transition to a cleaner portfolio of power generation resources, additional transmission capacity will be needed to promote the continued reliability of the bulk power system and support the interconnection of new generation resources. In the thumb region, approximately 1,200 megawatts (MW) of wind generation is currently connected, or under construction to connect, to ITC's Thumb Loop Project, a 140-mile transmission system completed in 2015 that was designed to meet the identified maximum wind energy potential of the region.

The J340 Generator Interconnection Project connects the Apple Blossom Wind Farm to ITC’s transmission system. The project included upgrades to ITC’s Grassmere Substation in Colfax Township, and new 120,000 volt (120 kV) single-circuit structures and conductor (wires) extending west through Oliver Township. This project was completed in September.

The J340 project is an example of ITC’s ongoing commitment to the operational efficiency and reliability of Michigan’s high-voltage transmission grid. The company has invested more than $3.5 billion in capital project maintenance and transmission infrastructure improvements in Michigan since 2003. These investments are improving the reliability and safety of the transmission infrastructure while ensuring its ability to meet new energy demands. View project profile.
